A Maryland man, distraught over what authorities are terming a domestic situation, held police at bay for more than 12 hours last week at the Big Meadows campground in Shenandoah National Forest before surrendering at 5 a.m. June 20.
Thomas Eugene Shepherd, 53, of Piney Point, Md., barricaded himself in his own vehicle and threatened park police with a handgun before being arrested, according to park spokesman Chuck Anibal.
The drama spread to Sperryville, 20 miles away, when a special unit of the U.S. Park Police needed to land their helicopter at Pullen Field on U.S. 211. The top of the mountain was socked in by fog, said Mr. Anibal.
