I also noticed the magnificent yellow spears of the mullein flower stalks. They stand erect like people in a trail of soft velvety leaves. Mullein flower oil can help cure ear infections. A tea made from the flowers has a soothing effect on the digestive system. The Indians add dried leaves to a smoking mixture, each step of the collecting and preparing is lavished with prayer, meditation and song.
Later as the day became one of the most beautiful days of summer, I was driving back down 231. I passed a truck, that men were standing on, holding big hoses, spraying weed killer. It was as if they were holding machine guns making war against these healing herbs.
Their aliveness was so powerful, I could hear them screaming! I don’t understand why VDOT has to kill these vibrant plants, especially at the peak of their flowering. It is a sin against nature, at a time when there is no excuse for unskillful action toward our environment.
A few hours later, driving the same road I noticed the poisined plants, wilting, brown, and dying. Why are these plants harmful? Is it because their colors are too beautiful? Is the joy and pleasure received from them too simple? Or are they too wild and free? I wish someone would please tell me why.
