The first fundraising event for Jerry Wood, Democratic candidate for the 31st District of the House of Delegates, was deemed one of the most bountiful pre-nomination fundraisers ever put on in the state.
Wood’s campaign fundraiser, which took place at Ted and Elizabeth Bullard’s Ridgelea in Fauquier last month, raised nearly $25,000, according to Earl Frazier, fundraising coordinator.
The event was attended by Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, who is expected to run for governor in 1993, and Del. A1 Smith of Winchster, chairman of the House Democratic caucus and a chief fundraiser for Democrats around the state.
Smith told a crowd of about 60 people at Ridgelea, “Your candidate raised more money than I have ever known in the state of Virginia” before a Democratic nomination.
The Winchester delegate said that the amount was remarkable for a candidate who currently has no known opposition.
“It’s hard to raise money when you don’t have opposition — or certainly announced competition,” said Smith, who represented Fauquier County from 1974 to 1981.
“In order for any candidate to succeed today, it takes money,” said Ms. Terry. “With Jerry Wood, there’s a story to tell.”
Frazier said that the campaign was originally aiming to raise about $20,000.
