He realizes that a large part of his new job will be dealing with discipline. “You have to deal with the kids individually and get them to see that their behavior in school is an important part of their being in school,” he said. “It’s a matter of self-respect and respect for the instructor.”
Obviously the part of the job that most interests him now, however, is taking overall charge of the athletic program. “Any school, but especially a small school is central in the life of the community," he said.
“Athletics shows off the school in ways that other things can’t. I’d like to encourage people to come out and participate in and enjoy athletics. I’d like to see the gym fall every time,” he said.
“The more successful the athletics are the more kids become involved, and the more successful the school and athletics will be,” he added.
The assistant principal’s job was vacated by David Smith, who was named last month as the new Rappahannock Elementary principal.
