Slaughter, cousin of incumbent U.S. Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr., who is resigning due to ill health. Mr. Baumgardner introduced her as “what I would call a native daughter,” speaking of the candidate’s family ties to Rappahannock.
Ms. Slaughter, a Charlottesvillebased environmental advocacy lawyer, stated she hoped to secure enough delegates to obtain the party’s nomination prior to the convention this Saturday, and by last Wednesday had accumulated 128 of the roughly 151 she will need.
“Rappahannock,” she said, “for me as a child was kind of the mythical place. We were always going to Culpeper, but my mother would talk about Rappahannock.” She grew up in Madison County, near Peola Mills.
