make him say clearly what he means by ultra-liberal, and exactly why he thinks that is bad. Otherwise, it is simply name calling, on the level of a small boy quarreling in a schoolyard.
Mr. Allen is a harmless young man who, if he is elected, will fit right in with most of Congress: those who are content to settle down in a well-paid lifetime job with fantastic fringe benefits and the best retirement system they have been able to design for themselves. The price they pay for this is to go along to get along, and under no circumstances to say or do anything which might give some slight discomfort to the special interests whose money keeps them in office.
Mr. Allen clearly has no intention of attacking our obscene method of financing campaigns, which threatens to destroy the greatest system ever devised by a free people for their own self-government. He will not attack the enormous national debt which the president and Congress brush over with the annual lie of “budget control,” and which eats up one quarter of all our federal taxes and effectively forestalls any important goverment initiative, however necessary.
Mr. Allen ignores the destruction of our cities, the relegation of more and more Americans, especially children, to indecent poverty and inadequate health care, or the widening gap between rich and poor.
All this he can avoid by calling his opponent names.
