My battle
with alcohol

I have read the story of the “painter, grandfather, retiree” by Lisa Currie. Impressed and awed though I am, there is too much left out which must be said.
When the interview was set up it was agreed that we would discuss my work with alcohol programs. We did discuss this subject and many notes were taken. When the article went to press all of that was missing except for a brief mention of my being an alcoholism counselor in 1971.
I wanted a discussion of alcoholism and the treatment programs to appear in order to possibly help people who are suffering the fear, guilt and shame of this addiction. I received help back in 1971 and I am sufficiently grateful that I want to pay it back. If someone reads that there are people like themselves who have recovered perhaps they will step forward and ask for help.
I have written two previous letters to the editor of this newspaper pleading for an attitude change. Under General District Court a separate column for drunk in public and DWI and other drug charges should be maintained. How are these people to get help if we don’t point the finger and make it clear that they have a problem? “It isn’t a secret anymore.” There would be a lot more people alive today if the par
