Ms. Daughtery charged that GOP candidate George Allen transfered funds from his state campaign chest, money that includes corporate donations. Such donations are not allowed in federal races, and she said the Slaughter campaign was “investigating.”
She also said that Ms. Slaughter had raised $30,703 as of the most recent disclosure, and Mr. Allen’s statement indicated he had raised $30,022.
If Ms. Slaughter is nominated, she said, her campaign will focus on abortion rights and what she said was Mr. Allen’s lack of initiative.
“The issue with George is that he’s running for the 7th District in a conventional way. He has no new ideas and that is going to be his weakness,” said Ms. Daughtery.
She also called the Republican nominee “anti-choice” on abortion.
“I’d like to see the Democrats united here because it’s such a short race. It will be a sprint to the finish,” she said.
The convention begins at 10 a.m. at Culpeper High School. Delegates from Rappahannock County are James E. Swindler Sr., James E. Swindler Jr., Douglas Baumgardner arid Margaret R. White. Both Swindlers support Mr. Reed, the other two delegates have committed to Ms. Slaughter.
