She accused Mr. Reed and Mr. Green of “making wild statements. Why don’t they get commitments if people are interested?”
Campaign finances have emerged as in important issue in the race. Mr. Green said he isn’t raising any money “to avoid the appearance of any impropriety,” but acknowledged that U.S. Senate rules prohibit him from raising any because he is an employee of the Senate Banking Committee. He is on unpaid leave.
Were he to be nominated Saturday, he said, he would quit his job so that he could raise money.
Mr. Reed hopes to sway undecided delegates into his camp, and said he was “buoyed” by the numbers of uncommitted delegates to come out of the most recent round of county mass meetings.
“I am elated, and very enthusiastic about the strong indication that this Saturday’s convention is up for grabs,” according to a statement released by the Reed campaign.
The Culpeper convention, he said, “will be a rare opportunity in modem politics — an open convention — where no candidate has the votes to secure victory going into the convention.”
Mr. Green agreed: “This will be the most exciting 7th District convention in years, one in which anything can still happen.”
