The chance to meet new people, ^leara new skills, and beef up your art portfolio: That’s what attracted Heather Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wright of Route 646, Viewtown, along with nearly 40 rising high school seniors, to Rising Star, an intensive, five-week precollege program offered by the Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design.
For Miss Wright, Rising Star was a chance to explore the world of fashion and art. While at Savannah College of Art and Design she enrolled in fine arts, as well as Drawing I, a foundations course required of all freshmen. For both classes she earned 10 hours of college credit. She put in five hours of work, which was the same amount of time they spent in class.
In Fine Arts, Miss Wright sur- ' veyed many different media, including painting sculpture, and fibers. “In one project, we painted on fabric, and bleached designs onto black fabric,” she said. “It will be very helpful in later fashion courses.”
Outside of class, she and the other Rising Stars took trips to museums and galleries in Atlanta and Jacksonville. Beach parties, career workshops, Make-Your-Own-Video Night, and progressive snack night in Pulaski House, the Rising Stars’ residence hall, were all part of the experience.
Miss Wright was impressed enough with the program, and with Savannah College of Art and Design, to skip her senior year and enroll at the coUege for this fall.
“If a student feels that he is mature enough and ready to handle it, it’s rare opportunity,” she said.
