High school athletes have always been recognized for their accomplishments — they get letters, have annual banquets and all-star teams.

For kids who excel in the classroom, however, the official rewards are few — making the honor roll and acceptance at a top-notch college.

Thanks to a few teachers, this year that has been changed with the inauguration of a new program, Rappahannock Scholars.

Thirty-three high school students were honored in an openingday assembly Tuesday, and their status as Rappahannock Scholars will pay off — literally.

Those who make the honor roll for the entire year, and miss 15 or fewer days from school, are entitled td a special ID card and a letter similar to ones granted varsity athletes.
