Rappahannock is split between two state senate districts starting with this year’s election. In the 26th Senate district, which includes Wakefield, Hampton, Jackson, and Piedmont districts, incumbent Republican Sen. Kevin Miller of Harrisonburg was nominated Tuesday night in Sumerduck (in Fauquier County).
Margaret Haynes, also of Harrisonburg, was nominated by the Democrats last Thursday in Lurav to run against Sen. Miller.
Ms. Haynes, an aide to Sixth District Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Olin, said she believes she can win the election against the two-term incumbent. She said Sen. Miller has been an ineffective “do-nothing” representative in Richmond.
She said rural areas need to elect Democrats to have effective representation, but she said she wants to work with Republicans and Independents as well as Democrats to be an effective voice for the district.
Sen. Miller said elected school boards, parental consent or notification before an abortion could be performed on a minor and no tax increase are his primary issues.
