been acting as area representative for Youth for Understanding, the program that serves Rappahannock. She wanted to give up that volunteer position and asked Mrs. Helmer if she would take over.

“I decided that rather than do it myself, we'd do it together; it would be a team effort,” Mrs. Helmer said.

“Some team effort,” Mr. Helmer commented. “I do all the work, and you get to play with the kids.”

Actually Mr. Helmer does most pf the recruiting, Americans to go overseas and families to host students com'ing to the United States. Then Mrs. Helmer does the interviewing. Together they try to match the students coming with host families.

Once the foreign students are in the area, the Helmers keep in touch at least monthly with the students and their American families. Theys are the ones called if the students or families are having problems adjusting. Sometimes a student is more comfortable talking with Mrs. Helmer, and sometimes Mr. Helmer is the one chosen.
