Virginia has joined the Congressional Award program to cite young volunteers with national recognition for their achievements.
The Congressional Award, the highest youth service award in the United States, honors youths between the ages of 14 and 24 for their voluntary public service, personal achievements, physical fitness and expedition activities.
The new Virginia State Congressional Award Council, consisting of 21 members, was appointed March 19 by U.S. Sens. Charles Robb and John Warner, most of Virginia’s congressmen and Gov. Douglas Wilder to assist young people in applying for the Congressional Award. Founded in 1979 as a national program, the noncompetitive award has since gained enough recognition to go statewide. Virginia, Arizona, Wyoming, Oregon and Utah are the first states to organize statewide programs for the award.
The program is also available in more than 70 congressional districts throughout the United States and is open to anyone between the ages of 14 and 24.
The award may be earned on the bronze, silver or gold level depending on the age and volunteer work of each candidate and is presented by a senator or congressman.
Winners of the award receive an Olympie-style medal in brona^ silver or gold and a certificate wfned by four congressional leaders.
