The Rappahannock Lions were enlisted in the campaign to overcome drug abuse in the county at their November dinner meeting at the Bleu Rock Restaurant. The capacity crowd of Lions and guests were very attentive as Lt. Jeff Brown of the Sheriffs Office described important aspects of the local. DARhJ program currently being communicated to students at Rappahannock Elementary School.
DARE is a nationwide program initiated in Los Angeles in 1983 and currently being presented by specially trained law enforcement officers across the country. Lt. Brown asked the audience if anyone knew what “DARE” stood for and very few knew.
DARE is a new “preventive medicine” program designed to combat the threat of drug abuse before curiosity can develop into addiction. DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
Lion President Mike Mahoney reported that “we all were grateful for Lt. Brown’s excellent presentation. We learned a lot and in response the Lion Board made a $250 donation to help the local DARE program buy additional teaching aids.” Lion Guy Foster was responsible for arranging the program and introducing the speaker.
Some of us might ask “is this kind of educational program needed in a rural county like Rappahannock?” The answer is a definite “yes.” “We ar not entirely isolated from the drug problems of larger communities. There are serious drug abuse and drug distribution problems very near us in Front Royal, Warrenton and Culpeper,” according to Lt. Brown.
“Even LSD is making a comeback in our area. There is a direct relationship between drug abuse and local crime such as the recent rash of breaking and entering in Rappahannock. We know of a crack cocaine addict whose habit is costing in excess of $500 a day.
