Katherine Riley, who has been a member of the Amissville Extension Homemakers Club for over 50 years, was honored as the 1991 Homemaker of the Year at the countywide E.H. Achievement Night last month in the Flint Hill Fire Hall.
Mrs. Riley is a master quilter. She is presently teaching a quilting class for county residents. The class has 20 people and meets twice a month. Mrs. Riley’s quilts have won ribbons at the fairs and have become prized family possessions.
She has taught other groups to quilt and always shares her knowledge without charge. She made baby quilts for the “Quilts for Baby AIDS Victims.”
Mrs. Riley taught Sunday School for many years at the Amissville Baptist Church. At the same time she prepared communion, made Christmas program costumes, arranged flowers for the church, and was always a lady and Christian example to be followed. She does not wait to be asked to do a job—she volunteers. You can depend on her to complete the task.
Mrs. Riley is a walking history book. She is a descendant of the original Amiss family that founded Amissville. She is an authority on local history and is very interested in preserving buildings and furnishings for future generations to enjoy. She enjoys genealogy and has researched several families and is most generous in sharing her knowledge.
