Board in October. Work under the 240-day contract is expected to be completed in the fall of 1992. The new two-lane road will be constructed south of the existing road.
A second construction phase, scheduled for advertisement next year if adequate funding is available, would complete the four laning of U.S. 211 from the Covington River west to the village of Sperryville.
The first phase of the current project is the development of a wetland area near the Covington River. This will replace small wetland areas located along the corridor that will be impacted by the construction, Lipscomb explained.
“We will not build a pond, but will expose soils that will remain sufficiently saturated to support the growth of plants indigenous to wetlands,” Lipscomb said. “Grasses will be planted in the center of the site. This will be followed by the planting of shrubs and a screening of trees and plants normally found along the edge of a stream on the perimeter of the wetland area to provide a habitat for wildlife.”
The replacement of wetland areas that will be impacted by the construction is just one of the environmental concerns addressed by VDOT in its construction contracts, the VDOT engineer added.
The department Also requires control measures on all construction projects to prevent environmental impacts.
