During my nearly 30 years as a journalist covering politics and legislative matters I admittedly participated in some media frenzies, but never until recently had I touched off one, albeit totally unintentionally.
If you heard or read anything at all about the possibility Sen. John Warner might run for governor of Virginia in 1993, you can blame most of it on me.
I did not originate the speculation. I had seen a small article buried in a weekend edition of a Richmond newspaper that quoted sources close to Sen. Warner as saying he was considering a gubernatorial run.
Two days later while at a reception in Washington I saw Sen. Warner in person and we talked for a few minutes about politics and other things, particularly recalling some shared memories of life on the campaign trail.
As Sen. Warner was leaving to return to senatorial duties, I remarked I’d seen the small story that said he was thinking of running for governor and he said he was giving it some thought but was a long way from making any decision. End of conversation.
