Mrs. Van Dort said she wants to add definitions of demolition, major renovation, restoration and addition to the ordinance. She said the ARB agrees that the current ordinance is too restrictive in some instances and not restrictive enough in others, but that it will never be possible to draft an ordinance that covers every situation that can come up. “Most ordinances grow by amendment,” she said.

She suggested the ordinance include a “check list” so the ARB can go down the list and make sure the applicant has met all the requirements “rather than do different things for different people.”

Col. Willis said that “sending terse memos back and forth has caused a feeling of animosity in the town that is not needed.”
