Together the two will design and create a “daddy doll.”
Each doll is hand sewn from their shaped feet to their oval faces.
The bodies are stuffed with soft cotton or polyester materials. Their clothing is made from scraps of material. Their expressive faces, created last, stare at their beholders with a somewhat knowing visage.
Sometimes the dolls are created from old photos such as the male American Indian doll. Others are just characters from the mind and heart of Ms. McLaughlin.
A doll can take anywhere from a few weeks to a month to finish. Prices range from $45 to $150, depending on size and on the amount of work necessary to complete a doll.
Several dolls can be found at Piedmont Fine Art Gallery in Washington. Others can be found in the artist’s workshop in her home.
A mother who is staying home and an artist, Ms. McLaughlin wanted to work and be at home when her first child arrived four years ago.
“This allows me to be involved with my kids and bring mothering and art together,” she said.
