Several days after the story broke, Sen. Warner’s office issued an inconclusive press release quoting him as saying, “At present I have no plans to seek another public office,” and encouraging others interested to step forward. He pledged to continue to work closely and in a bipartisan manner with state officials through the 102nd Congress. However, the 103rd Congress starts in January 1993, a gubernatorial election year.
Despite all the headlines and broadcasts, anybody with any reasonable political knowledge would know that Sen. Warner, even if he entertained ideas of seeking the governorship, would never make a decision this early in the game.
Should he decide to run eventually, he needs no time to build name identification and could raise tons of money. I have my own ideas of what he will opt to do, but I’m not revealing them because the media might, still thinking erroneously I am privy to inside information, start another frenzy and I would like to retire from the limelight for a long, long time.
