That was just the beginning. I started getting calls from news organizations all over the state after the Associated Press picked up the story. What did the senator say, how did he say it, did he say any more than I had let on, did I think he would run for governor?
Though I tried to explain that the story had originated with a Richmond paper and my role in it was strictly accidental and inadvertent, not one reporter mentioned all that. Instead their stories made it seem as if I was one of Sen. Warner’s close political advisers and he wouldn’t dream of running for governor or anything else without consulting me first. I was flabbergasted that my name was being printed and broadcast all over Virginia as the source of this great revelation. The fire was fueled even more when Sen. Warner’s office declined any comment initially.
