Dr. Gangel said the other option was to move vocal and instrumental music classes from a modular classroom behind the building to the stage off the gymnasium.
A class could then use the modular classroom, but Dr. Gangel noted that the children would frequently have to go outside to go to the main school building to use the restrooms, go to lunch, and for other special classes. It would also present the problem of noise from physical education interfering with music instruction and noise from music instruction interfering with physical education. Also, he pointed out, the stage would not provide any security for musical instruments.
Dr. Gangel said there was just enough money in the budget to hire the additional teacher, but there would be no money left over for emergencies. He noted that the current budget was based on an enrollment of 1,010 and that 1,030 students were enrolled Monday.
The board supported his suggestion that he ask the Board of Supervisors for an additional appropriation that would be used only in an emergency. He noted that currently the school system cannot apply to the state for additional funds to cover the extra students. If the supervisors appropriate the additional funds, even if they aren’t spent, the school system would be eligible for additional funds from the state, he said.
