It’s that time of year again when Rappahannock County dressed up in its best bib and tucker does what only Rappahannock can do so well.
Complete with scenery, produce and charm, our county represents the best of the one-day trips for some, (even longer for others), for that jaded, harassed and generally in-need-of-a-break crowd.
A trip to this little comer of the world is a sure-fire way top take a walk back through time, when “family values” had real meaning, (Dan Quayle, eat your heart out) and when community really meant something.
No event celebrates this special time of year more authentically than the Sperryville Harvest Festival, Which is scheduled for Oct. 3-4.
One of the big highlights of this year’s festival will be the appearance of John Jackson, renouned musician and Rappahannock native. He is scheduled to appear from noon to 4 p.m. on both days at Country Home Antiques.
Jackson, who has performed in Over 60 nations, as well as for Presidents, the Congress, Senate and European royalty, was the seventh son bom to Rappahannock tenant farmers Suttee and Hattie Jackson. During his lifetime, Jackson has been a farmer, chauffeur, butler and philosopher, and gravedigger.
In 1986, he received the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Begun in 1982, each year this award is given to a select few individuals for preserving an art or art form. * To receive this honor, an indiviudal must have a large body of work that reflects their particular talents and also must exude warmth and genersity of spirit.
Those who know John Jackson aay that although he is a world-famous musician, a songwriter and recording artist, he is known for being a simple man whose artistic genius is only surpassed by the depth and richness of his kind heart.
