The Meadows is a lovely example of architectural design, taste and ways of life spanning the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Tea will be served at The Meadows from 1 to 5 p.m. on both dates of the tour.

Next we go to the village of Flint Hill in the center of which is 711 Main St., the home of Dwight and Jennifer Matthews. Initially this also began as a log home dating to the 1750’s.

The lower level is stonewalled, in ground with chestnut beams and a large cooking fireplace. The upper level is built of stone-chinked chestnut logs which have been exposed. Prior to 1800 a third story was added, probably as a sleeping loft.

In 1847 a three story addition was built on the south end and the house took on the Colonial Federal appearance it has today.

The street-level entry is into a wide hall leading to a veranda on the west side from which there is a lovely view of the surrounding fields and mountains. The Matthews’ two-story addition on this side includes bedroom, bath and kitchen. Outbuildings include a mortise and pegged structure now a guest house, a former carriage house now workshop and a “cracker box" now Dwight Matthews’ architectural studio and office.

Moving 4.4 miles east of Flint Hill down Route 647 and its intersection with Route 637 we come to Keysville Post, the home of Dr. E. Phillip Wines and Mary Mochary.

Until 1888 this had been the site of Keysville Post Office. The residence consists of two buildings transported here and added to since 1922. The current living room is a log house dating to the 18<)0’s moved here by Col. Sterling Larrabee who added bedroom and kitchen and used it as a hunting lodge.

Col. Sterling founded the Old Dominion Hunt. The area is still known locally as the “Kennels” harking back to the colonel’s kennels for his fox hounds.
