While some days, Baldwin’s hums along at such a fast pace, it is a wonder that anyone who works there can catch their breath, other times, admits Baldwin, things can slow down to a snail’s pace. “It’s pretty unpredictable,” he said.
For some folks who don’t travel much, our store is probably their main place to shop, but for many it is just a place to pick up a few things, said Baldwin. “It does seem like we are the Rappahannock news center,” laughed Curie.
However, the store has not been immune to the ups and downs of a slow economy. “Used to be some people would come in here and spend $5 or $6, now they might spend $2 or $3. A lot of folks are economizing, ”he observed.
His biggest selling commodity, said Baldwin, is gas, which is actually owned by Chevron. “They set the prices, not me," he said. “I used to have the gas, but I gave it up because you can’t make any money on it.”
Baldwin’s gas pumps are self service, however, there are a few people, he said, who come to get gas who must use walkers to get around. “We know who they are and when they drive up, we go out and put their gas in for them,” he said.
