The news that Ross Perot is apparently considering reentering the presidential race is disturbing, indeed.
While we have, in the past, credited Perot with forcing the other two major candidates to face the real issues of the campaign, his exit from the race in mid-July was, we thought, for the best. During his short, albeit unofficial, candidacy, Perot displayed a remarkable and disturbing unwillingness to answer the inevitable questions about how he would lead this country. He seemed long on wind and short on specifics. “Trust me” is not an acceptable campaign slogan.
He stirred an unprecedented groundswell of political activism across the country, and his hasty exit from the race left his volunteer army angry, sad and bitter. He has trifled with his supporters once, and to dangle the prospect of his reemergence again is, we think, only one more evidence of his arrogance and self-centered nature.
More important, Perot’s departure put an end to the questions h<* seemed so reluctant to answer. Another lastminute candidacy would rob the American people of the opportunity to compare Perot’s ideas against the other two candidates — both of whom have spent the last 10 weeks on the campaign hustings, putting their ideas before the American people.
Last weekend, Perot said his volunteers — not him — will ultimately decide on his candidacy. That’s a remarkable, and uncharacteristic, statement from a man whose career — and fortune — was built by doing everything his way. frankly, we don’t believe it.
-It appears Perot is attempting an end run around the presidential selection process, avoiding specifics about his plans. However, those plans would affect every American, were he to be elected President.
The American people should insist that Perot either play by the rules, or sit the game out. Right mftv, the sidelines seem to the the proper place for him to stay.
