RICHMOND - The number of farms in the Old Dominion has dropped to 44,000, according to an annual survey conducted by the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service.
This is the third consecutive year Virginia farm numbers have declined, continuing a downward trend that began in 1935.
Urban growth is expanding into traditional rural areas, explained Robert T. Bass, state statistician with the VASS.
While the number of farms has dropped from a high of nearly 200,000 in 1935, the average size of a Virginia farm has more than doubled.
