The Baldwins obviously enjoy their work and their customers. “I never have to read the paper,” said Baldwin, “we get the news long before it comes out.”
“We cater to our customers, he added. “Whatever they need, we will try to get it for them.”
Although the store has been in the Baldwin family for 34 years, it has a rich and varied history. Before the Baldwin family bought it, it was owned by E.M. Richards and was known as Mac’s Place. A combination grocery store and social center, the establishment was a gathering spot for people who eryoyed a bit of dancing and maybe even a brew or two.
Baldwin also recalls the early days when, without any such commodity as self service, he and Cucie would individually retrieve every item the customer bought.
“That was exhausting,” said Baldwin. “We almost ran our feet off, so we had to make a change.”
“Rappahannock has been a wonderful place, to raise our children,’ said Baldwin, who lives on a hill di rectly in back of the store. “It haf been a good place to put down roots and become part of the community We like Rappahannock exactly th< way it is - rural -and we don’t want ii to change.”
“This is a place where you can re lax and get back to family values, he added.
