Many of these sentiments were echoed by those who spoke to the packed church on Sunday. The proposed project would “suck up all of the road funding for Northern Virginia, and perhaps the rest of the state,” Gainesville resident and veteran development antagonist Philomena Hefter said.
According to Charles Matheson of The Plains, the Disney park would be “a, catalyst for building roads in undeveloped areas,” and he urged that the entire area west of the Bull Run Mountains be included in a historic district and protected from development.
Edward Pope, Middleburg, pointed to Euro-Disney, claiming that the $2 billion project, of which Walt Disney Co. owns 49 percent, “trashed the environment and then failed.
“Many people who came there to work have since been laid off, and are now on welfare,” he added. The massive 30-mile highway from Paris to the park, built through once beautiful countryside, is now barren, he said.
