Carlos Avelar is “Mr. Athlete.” He plays forward on a soccer league team based in Culpeper, is their leading scorer, and the team is undefeated.
He also holds the position of forward on the RCHS varsity basketball team, and plans to play on the soccer team and run track in the spring. Outside of school, he plays tennis and rides horses. And, in his spare time, he is a full-time student at RCHS.
Carlos is here for one year as an exchange student from Belo Horizon Te, Brazil, which is about six hours from Rio de Janiero. After spending the first 17 years of his life living in large cities, and most recently in a high-rise apartment building, Carlos, is enjoying his stay with Jeanie, Dick and Laura McNear on their faim in Gid Brown Hollow.
“My favorite classes are biology and chemistry,” says Carlos. His plan is to attend medical school upon his return to Brazil, and he would like to specialize in ophthalmology or be a heart surgeon.
Carlos says there is not a really big difference between the food here and what he is used to in Brazil. “I love my mom’s mashed potatoes,” he said, referring to Mrs. McNear’s cooking. His favorite restaurants here are Pizza Hut and McDonald’s.
