Boy Scout Troop 196 of Culpeper has developed a patch to celebrate the very popular Old Rag Mountain Trail. The patch has been made and is ready for sale. The 3-inch patch will sell for $2. The patch is available whether one hikes the trail or simply wants to collect the patch.
“Old Raggedy” or Old Rag' Mountain is an outlying formation of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The mountin is pail of the Shenandoah National Park. It is a favorite with day hikers and the best mountain between North Carolina’s Grandfather Mountain and Maine’s Mt. Katahdin.
The 7.2 mile circuit hike had a fascinating section along the rocky Ridge Trail. Hiking through the rocks means climbing, pulling, squeezing, and scrambling. From the parking area near Nethers, it is a mile and a half to the crest of the rocky ridge. The Ridge Trail then becomes an obstacle course for a little over a mile. There is a false summit before the actual Old Rag summit...3.291 ft.
The trail down is much easier. The Saddle Trail is about 4.5 miles back to the starting parking area. The trail passes two shelters before using the Weakley Hollow Fire Road the last two and a half miles. The elevation change between the
