Ms. Hannum said that the idea for the calendar was born at a meeting of the Economic Development Advisory Committee as a method of stressing that Warrenton is a “single shopping district.” It gained strength when residents and business people suggested at a forum held by the Business Study Climate Group that this unity needs to be demonstrated, she said.

Often, she added, the Old Town shopping district and the bypass seem to be on opposite poles of the planet instead of within a mile of one another. This concern has been noted time and time again since Ms. Hannum’s arrival in Warrenton just six months ago, she said.

“[The calendar] is an idea whose time has come,” said Ms. Hannum.

The calendar, because it includes activities in both areas, will serve to unify the town in terms of improving economic conditions, and will implement the “spend Christmas in Warrenton. Put your money where your heart is” campaign sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Hannum said.

She said that the calendar will be mailed out during the week of Thanksgiving and will list the who, what, where, and when of events such as the Christmas Chorale and Breakfast for Santa.

Ms. Hannum said that in addition to pulling the community’s events together, the calendar will also attempt to attract business to the town. It will outline incentives being offered by local merchants during the shopping season, she said.

Not only will it specify special sales being offered but will present, for example, the fact that some vendors will be handing out goodies such as carnations or refreshments while shoppers browse through thenstores, she said.
