portray the Governor-elect as a Scrooge. While in Congress, he was generous to his staff but always mindful that any money spent came from the taxpayers of America. As the chief exective of Virginia, I have no doubt he will remind everyone in state government, from top to bottom, that they must be partners with him in protecting Virginia’s history of fiscal integrity.
Someone who knew George in college days told me he was just as personally frugal then as now, although his father, the coach of the Washington Redskins, was very affluent. The person recalled that he bought second hand books to save money and did all of his shopping in discount stores.
It’s good to know that the Executive Mansion will soon be occupied by a fiscal tighwad whose heroes are such famously frugal Virginians as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and James Madison. I doubt if he’ll be able to stop at 7-11’s for a while for the hot dog special, and yet I wouldn’t put is past him. And he won’t take off the cowboy boots either just because he’s the Governor of Virginia.
