The school administration has teams of teachers working to develop more demanding academic programs and instruction in such character values as honesty, fairness and dependability, Superintendent David Gangel told the School board last week.
Dr. Gangel explained that this process began with surveys of current and former students and parents of students who had left the school system.
He said that the school system is doing very well by most measures of success. Rappahannock students were eighth in the state in the percentage of sixth graders who passed all three of the literacy passport tests last year. Of those top eight school systems, Rappahannock scored third in the writing test and fourth on the reading test, he said.
He said that the county school system is known throughout the nation as a leader in using total quality management concepts and is a leader in the state in using technology in education.
Still surveys of parents and graduates show some feel the schools should be doing more, he said, and the school system has started a process of responding.
