He said the survey also showed these parents want students grouped together by ability in academic classes and the “RCHS academic program to be comparable in academic challenge to presigious prep schools.”
By a margin of fifteen to one, the parents want “more advanced academic class offerings and instruction and reinforcement of traditional character virtues.”
He said results were mixed, leading him to believe parents do not necessarily want a more competitive, procedure for getting into academic classes or “more expectations with regard to the amount or volume of academic homework given to students.”
A similar survey of parents of academic elementary school students showed mostly the same results. However, in the elementary school parents wanted children grouped by behavior rather than ability and they did not seem to want “the academic program to be comparable in academic challenge to prestigious college prep schools.”
The schools have set up teams to plan how to satisfy these parent desires.
There are teams working on improving the college prep program at both schools, teams working on improving communications with the home, and teams working to develop a “character, virtues curriculum.”
