Game Warden Jim Bankston reported that the deer kill so far this season has been average to below average. '
He said that the Game Commission has been trying to spread the hunting pressure out over the season by extending the archery season and the muzzleloader season.
He said he believes this has meant that more hunters bagged deer before the start of the rifle season and will wait until this weekend to enter the woods again.
Also he noted that the weathfer has been warm and some days have been windy. He said he thinks this also accounts, in part, for the lowfer harvest.
Mr. Bankston said he feels that illegal hunting is also down this year, but he expects it to pick up later in the season.
He said 150 deer have been checked at Mayhugh’s Grocery in Amissville. Usually about 300 are checked during the entire season. He said he does not get a final count from any of the checking stations until the end of the season.
Mr. Bankston reported that at least five bears were killed during the archery season. Bear were out of season last week, but came back in for the rifle season Monday. Mr. Bankston said that there are plenty of bear in the woods, but they haven’t been coming out to eat coni and apples as they were last year, because they have plenty of food in the woods this year.
