From the 278 woolly bears, the consensus is that the first half of the winter starting Nov. 15 and going to Jan. 15 will be normal for that time of the year in both temperature and precipitation. From Jan. 16 to the end of March, the woolly bears show a very mild winter with above average temperatures and little snow. The woolly bears predicted this by their three bands of which the front band (representing the first half of winter) was average in length. The back band (representing the second half of winter) was significantly shorter than normal. As a result of those markings, which were similar in all woolly bears, the sponsors were able to make the predictions.
The woolly bears and the Almanack differ this year in their predictions. The Almanack predicts the first half of the winter to be cold, especially the months of November and January, while the woolly bears say the weather will be average for that time of the year.
With regard to the second half of the winter, again the woolly bears and the Almanack differ. The woolly bears are predicting a very mild winter from Jan. 15 until spring, while the Almanack says the end of January' will be very cold and then starting in February, the temperatures will be average.
If the Almanack is correct in its prediction of both snowfall and temperature conditions, we will see the majority of the 45 inches of snow that is predicted fall in December
