contestants had offered a really stale simile, “as exciting as watching grass grow.” Pfui! Then I came across 16 entries from the 11th grade at Statesboro High School in Statesboro, Va., and there was an entry from Brian Tanner: “as exciting as watching AstroTurf grow.”
Wow! Here was an original, compact simile of universal familiarity. I put it aside for the finals. Then 50 entries came in from Western Row Elementary School in Mason, Ohio, and there was an entry from young Chris Moran: “Going to school is as exciting as watching AstroTurf grow."
