Both panels endorsed pay raises for state employees during each fiscal year of the biennium. Gov. Allen’s proposal called for a pay raise during the second year only.
“At a time when we expect and demand that state employees and faculty do more with less we cannot ignore our obligation to them,” said Sen. Stanley S. Walker, D-Norfolk, who serves as the senior co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
But public school teachers will not be among the state employees receiving raises.
Consequently, the Virginia Education Association is upset that public education teachers will not receive raises while college faculty, state workers and constitutional officers will.
