Amissville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, and the Washington Volunteer Fire Department. The professionalism and selflessness of every member of these organizations is unquestionable. Every county in the Commonwealth should be blessed with such top notch organizations. I would also like to thank Col. Dieter Knuepfer for his coordinating efforts without which 1 would never have had the pleasure of working with such fine personnel.
Please extend our warmest regards and thanks to all citizens of the county. On behalf of the soldiers who came to Rappahannock County, I can say with certainty that we would all come back at any time in the future to help in any way. The Virginia National Guard rarely gets a chance to act in its civil affairs capacity except in times of emergency. While I do not wish any type of emergency in Rappahannock County, I db look forward for the opportunity to work with county personnel in the future.

Stop Bypass
To the Editor:
It is with all due respect that I take this opportunity to voice my concern about the VDOT Sperryville bypass plan. I understand that this project is in its very early development and I heartily hope that it will proceed no further.
At the VDOT information meeting on Feb. 12th in the RCHS auditorium, I inquired of Mr. Bob Moore, VDOT chief engineer, as to where this project concept originated. He indicated to me that it was initiated some two years ago by a request from our county Board of Supervisors. I am unsure as to the reason for such a request but the present day plan begs the question: Who does this bypass serve? 1 have not heard of a local ground swell complaining of the existing situation. Should an area bridge require repair, why is such a project over-kill necessary?
At this day and time, I fear it has become sadly necessary to look very skeptically at plans developed by out of county interests. 1 simply doubt the true nature of their motivation. Look how much of our local landscape has already been drastically altered. We must not turn a blind eye to the fact that as muph as we might pray that we may not lose faith in other people, we have learned from experience that when you give an inch to some, they take miles and miles and miles.
