have trouble sometimes keeping up with both the horse schedule and my work schedule,” said St. Clair when asked about juggling business and pleasure. “I really like picking out horses to, own and train, and putting a base on them here at my farm, but my job dictates that I send the best of my horses to a trainer to get the most out of them. 1 hate to waste their talent.”
Though St. Clair rode a handful of races himself this spring, Maryland professional David Benson handled the training and race riding chores on Barbara as he did in the mare’s first season of racing over fences in 1994.
“My work schedule was too much for me to train her myself that year, so 1 asked David to take her for me,” St. Clair explained. Wins at the Orange County Pointto-Point and Loudoun earned her the 1994 distaff title.
Last year, the now 7-year-old daughter of Raise A Man won again at Loudoun and broke her sanctioned maiden in a hot contest at Laurel. St. Clair said that the mare was getting a full year off, but that he expects to run her back this fall.
“1 am one of the more patient owners,” he said. “I know that horses can’t be expected to win all the time .... they can only do so much. It is more important to come back in one piece. She’ll be back
