I he Latin root ot the word “amateur” gives a clue to the sporting history of the steeplechasing game. The Latin amare means “to love.” Hence, love of the sport, for sport’s sake, is the basis of amateurism. Love - of horses, of competition, of racing - has driven steeplechasing from its infancy right into the twilight hours of the 20th century in 1996.
The sport of steeplechasing began its long and colorful history populated and contested strictly by pure sporting enthusiasts. There were few professionals in the 1700’s hunt field in Ireland, and when men began racing their fleet field hunters from point to point, it was as a pasttime, not a business.
