The National Steeplchase Association has adopted an amateur-apprentice program, with $5,000 “purse promotions” funded through the National Steeplechase Foundation which serves to create and support amateur interest to build the sport of jump racing.
The program designates 10 races this spring season open only to amateur riders - something that jockeys must declare their eligibility for on the license application each year.
