Bom in the village of Bansha, County Tipperary, Ireland, Russell’s family had always “fiddled in horses and hunting,” he said, adding that breeding thoroughbreds was also a sidelight to the hunt field. A winner of France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the ’70s, Rheingold was the “best of the lot Mostly we had pointers and hunter ‘chasers.”
Russell rode a winner in his first start at age 16, falling over the first fence but remounting to win the 3, 1/2-mile ‘chase. “I rode a handful of winners, and hunted regularly, but was off to medical school before 1 knew it”
After graduating from Trinity College, Russell followed the sun to Barbados for a short stint as an obstetrician, “birthing every single baby on that island for two years.”
Russell’s next move was to the states where he studied radiology at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He went to the University of North Carolina for a teaching position for two years before entering private practice 18 years ago in Elizabeth City, near the outer banks.
