Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer organization that constructs homes for and with low-income families. In Rappahannock County the first Habitat house was built for Barbara Shanks and her family last spring. Mr. Darby said he feels that was a very successful project, and he hopes to duplicate it this year.
He said Habitat was fortunate in that Mrs. Shanks owned her land. This year the committee may well have to look for land to purchase, since most eligible families do not own land.
Once a family has been selected, work can begin on fund raising and locating people willing to be the “core building team.”
