“1 like to speak with the riders [during an ofTicially called meeting] before the day’s racing begins,” he continued. “Then I get to know who might be on a problem horse, one who ‘freezes’ at the start, or bolts from the tape. And that way the riders have no excuse not to know my method of starting.”
Newman said he deals with different horse and rider problems as they come up, but that any starter’s objective was to give all runners a fair shot from the beginning.
