The Ululating Mummies, who will be playing dance music at the Sadie Hawkins Dance this Saturday night at the Washington Fire Hall, is an eclectic group of musicians and artists from Richmond.
The dance is a fund raiser for Spring Mountain Waldorf School.
According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, to “ululate” is to 1. howl or hoot, or 2. to wail or lament loudly.
Mummy member Barry Bless derived the name from mummer, which is British for street artist, and the word ululate, which was the “word for the day” on a radio station, back in 1984:
