Michael Wharton from the high school and Ralph Pace from the elementary school were the big winners at the 1996 Science Fair. They each won a medal and a $50 savings bond.
Michael further developed a project he started on last year. Last year he tested the effect that storing seeds in cold had on them. He counted how many germinated and how much they grew and found that cold slowed their growth. However, judges told him that study was usually determined by weighing the seeds and plants. This year he stored 300 bean seeds in 35 degrees, 45 degrees and at room temperature. After bringing them out and watering them each day with 50 mililiters of water he weighed them and found this supported his earlier work. ‘ Ralph studied the effect of different construction techniques in making roof trusses on their strength.
