Just as steeplechasing emanated naturally out of the hunting fields of old, so, too did the sport of hunter pace. It evolved as a complementary sport between the non-competitive pasttime of foxhunting and the ultra-competitive sport of pace racing.
But rather than the rough and tumble pure racing sport of steeplechasing, pace riders finesse their way around flagged courses that circle hunt country, trying to duplicate a pre-set (but unannounced) “optimum time” — set by a horse and rider before the competition at a “normal hunting pace” for the host hunt. Competitors must then take into account a pack’s reputation for hound speed, terrain, natural obstacles and jumps en route before they ride the course.' ' 'A spring sport, hunter pacing is a carryover for fit foxhunters and their mounts to continue their riding on a competitive level while hunting abates during the breeding and whelping season for foxes.
